On this second installment of our Youngbloods sequence, Jazz Night time in America takes a take a look at Isaiah J. Thompson: a younger musician and composer with a mature contact and uncommon mixture of expertise, creativity, humility and honesty.
That final high quality is particularly essential to Thompson, who, for somebody who has achieved a lot at such a younger age, appears unburdened by ego. “I feel sincerity is one thing that is lacking, particularly in my technology,” he says, “and if you’re writing music, your job is to deliver folks again to what’s really occurring.”
And what’s “really occurring” in Thompson’s life is so much. Throughout his sophomore yr at Juilliard, already on the radar of many musical elders, he was taken beneath the wing of trumpeter and educator Wynton Marsalis. Since then, Thompson has been incomes recognition each at his common residencies round New York and on levels around the globe.
Thompson’s inspirations are wide-ranging — the previous (Thelonious Monk and Artwork Blakey are two of his musical heroes); the current (his compositions replicate socio-political actions, just like the Black Lives Matter motion); his childhood (and a love of comedian books); and his friends, like saxophonist Julian Lee, whom he met once they had been each youngsters at Jazz Home Children in Montclair, N.J.
On this episode we’ll hear three of Thompson’s authentic compositions, carried out by his quartet at Dizzy’s Membership. We’ll additionally hear him musical directing and performing two songs with The Younger Stars of Jazz, that includes Wynton Marsalis.
